Shedding Rubber at 200 Feet

It was supposed to be an evening for fun and fraternizing with our friends. Our goodies were packed, and we were on the circuitous route to the beach. What could go wrong? En route our tire starts shedding rubber as we begin to cross an overpass stretching high into the sky. There we were, with no where to pull over, a precipitous drop on either side of us, and a ticking time bomb of a tire underneath us.

Why sailing?

Robert by S2 27' SailboatAsk anyone who knows me, and I'll bet they didn't peg me for ever being interested in sailing. They'll see the nerd who grew up under the radiation of the television screen and computer monitor. They'll see the protective parents raising their children deep in suburbia, far away from the beach. I can't remember my parents ever taking me to the ocean. My only experience with boats had been on a row boat in June Lake or perhaps Lake Tahoe. So why give up the stability of land, and throw myself to the will of the sea?

Apple Crumb Cake

Apple Crumb Cake Oh my. I've just finished eating the entire crumb cake by myself again. It's moist and delicious. It surprisingly doesn't have all that much sugar compared to some cakes. Everyone loves this cake. This cake recipe is an adaptation of the Apple Pie Crumb Cake Muffins recipe from "Vegan with a Vengeance" by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. She's the chef of the world-renowned Post Punk Kitchen. This book is filled with tons of great tasting and relatively simple recipes.

Pad Thai

Pad Thai with thick noodlesThis recipe is an adaptation of the Thai Fried Noodles from Thai Vegetarian Cooking by Vatcharin Bhumichitr . I've made the recipe about a couple dozen times so far and everytime its delicious. I don't know how authentic my version of this classic recipe really is, but its certainly enjoyable. I tend to make more of the sauce than the recipe calls for to give it some extra spice.

The Meaning of Life

The only thing I think I know for certain is that I exist, and even that thought is tenuous at best. For all I know none of you, or anything outside of me exists. Everything I perceive could have been created to serve me and me alone. All of you could be a mere illusion. However, thoughts like that lead to abuses against nature, and the other possible beings that scurry around which may or may not have their own sentience (that includes you).
